Travel Forums System Talk Rate it option

Is the 'rate it' option/button something that is used a lot? I have been using TP since 2004 and have never used it! Do ratings given to posts go towards your status as respected member/travel guru etc?

Just wondering! :)

Not sure if it's used a lot by members, but it certainly contributes to your status. :)

It's used rather sparsely - only a few hundred people who've used the function at all, with only a couple of dozen people who've rated more than a handful of posts. The barrier to entry is probably just too high with needing to open a new page and submitting a form on there.
I personally make a point of it to rate posts which are made in reply to a question I've asked, and whenever I see a newer member answering questions (so being likely to become a regular), and sometimes when I think an answer by an established member is particularly helpful (or not) - but there's very few people who do the same.

The effect of voting is diminishing; it's really useful for giving promising new members a boost (or expressing disappointment when they're prolific but not very helpful), but it doesn't have nearly as much of an effect when rating a post by someone who's already a respected member.

Also, for what it's worth, there's safeguards built in to prevent abuse by people giving a whole lot of extreme ratings. (As far as I'm aware, there's only ever been one case of such attempted abuse (the people who participated in it (not naming names; they'll know who they are) might even have thought they were successful), which I think is rather good given the long time the feature has been here). These safeguards basically mean that rating posts really only can be used for good (helping teach the system who the helpful members are), and not for evil. And that means that even if the system is used sparsely, it still works pretty well in my book. :)

I'm not saying it's a good idea to implement, but a rating option would be more useful if other people could see the ratings--kinda like Yahoo has their thumbs-up/thumbs down counter for comment posts.

It might come across as pretty judgmental, though, so it may not exactly fit in with the TP spirit...
