Boa Viagem beach is the best place to stay. Decent beach, places to eat, drink. Take a taxi to Olinda, a colonial city about 25 minutes north of Recife. Has a lot of churches, museums, etc. Also has beach area with lots of restuarants, bars, music, good place to visit, afternoon to night.
Ask at your hotel about any tour going to Porto de Galinhas beach, about 2 hours south of Recife.
The is a nice area in the port area of the City of Recife that has a lot of restaurants, bars, music, etc.
Word to the wise. Don't wear any flashy jewelry, on the beach or in the steet. Lot of poverty in the area, and tourists are seen as ATM machines.
It should be rather warm at night, hot in the day.
Another point. Brazil has a very high rate of AIDS. At night you may see a lot of very young streetwalkers, some may be transsexuals. Protect yourself.
If you don't speak Portuguese, better to stay clear of anything that would be difficult to explain to the Police.

I lived in Recife for 9 years. Loved the place. I hear that there is much more violence, but it appears that it stays mostly in the slum areas.

Enjoy yourself. I had planned to go last month for a visit. maybe next month

I agree the best beach in Pernambuco is Porto de Galinhas. Or one of the many quieter beaches nearby like Maracaipe.
