Hi there, I am currently planning a trip to australia for 2010. My question is what is the average wage for a worker e.g. jobs that most backpackers do such as fruit picking etc.

I am asking this because I had planned to spend 5-6 months in australia working in order to save money to fund the next leg of the trip which will be new zealand and fiji. Can you make enough money to live on (e.g. accommodation, food costs etc) in australia while still having money to save for the next part of the trip?

I worked as a dish washer and cleaned hotel rooms in Port Douglas. Both paid just under 20 bucks an hour. Im not sure about fruit picking wages but restaurant and hospitality jobs tend to pay well. The bad thing is non residence pay 29% tax.

I pick fruit locally & get around $17/hour, we often have backpackers working with us & they are on similar rates... if you get a piece rate work, ie. payed by the bucket, you can potential earn more, although do the sums first as some farmers can be unscrupulous...

thanks for the reply. Do you think that earning roughly $20 an hour will be enough to live on and to save some for future trips?. Also what are the accommodation costs for a 2 bedroom apartment?
