Hi Everyone! Looking for a bit of advice...

I'm at a point in my life where i'm ready to just get up and go. I'm 20 yrs old and have just built up the courage to travel anywhere and everywhere on my own.

Is it possible to just get out there and do it with £1000 ready to use with all the euipment you need?

I want to travel for the next month looking to go to some major cities in Europe and hopefully time in Egypt and Athens...am i being too hasty?

I could spend ages planning but i want to get going as soon as possible...i got to thinking about visas and vacinations and i'm not sure how to even go about starting to prepare myself.

Has anyone got any advice for me?

Thanks guys!

You wont need vaccinations if you are just staying in Europe, not sure about Egypt though. £1000 for a month in Europe is certainly do-able. Book cheap flights now and just do it. I would however stay away from the really expensive cities like Amsterdam, Paris or any in Scandinavia. At this time of year it is probably best if you try to head as far south as you can so the weather is not quite so freezing.

Go to S.E. Asia...your 1000 will go a lot farther. Some places in N. Thailand and laos and cambodia are only 1 dollar per night...

I was living 9-20 bucks a day in these countries. In fact, I couldn't spend a lot of money even when I tried!!!!

The plane ticket might be more, but once you get there, the living is easy!!!!!

With your 1000 pounds I suggest that you apply for a visa to Syria, buy the Lonely Planet Middle East and then grab a cheap charter flight to Egpyt.

1000 pounds will not last long in Europe, but will take you quite far in the Middle East. Travel overland from Egypt to Istanbul and when money gets tight after 4-8 weeks of travelling go and find a job in Greece. If you come to Greece around April or May the hotel business should just start to pick up for summer season.

(That info is assuming you hold EU citizenship, otherwise you'd not be allowed to work in Greece.)

just do it! two years ago my fiance and i did just that--quit our jobs and hit the road. we traveled all over the US and you just figure out ways to make it work (i will admit that our hotels got shabbier towards the end). and we just traveled til we ran out of money. live frugally and do as much as you can! i want to be back doing that again!

omg all of your advice sounds wicked! thanks for posting everyone!

I was thinking of starting in Italy, then to greece and then move further south, and hopefully end up in the south americas, still recon £1k is enough?

I've already got the inca trail hike in Peru booked in May!

No.

Have you looked at the prices for flights to South America from Europe? IIRC this alone was 600 GBP. Considering that you need about 30 GBP per day in South America your money will last exactly 13 days. That is very optimistic, AFAIK the Inca trail was more expensive than the average 30 GBP.

EDIT:
Take a look at this pdf-file for prices, but add about 20 % to adjust for the latest up and down of the USD and the GBP.

And I did a check for a random date in May, London-Lima is indeed 580 GBP return.

if you want to travel for cheap just find a place you like and get a job. my friends and i travelled to the uk, then made our way to greece, and decided to stay in ios. it is very easy to find work on the greek islands, you can make enough to support yourself, so if you buy a plane ticket, that's all you need. you'll meet some great people and have the time of your life.
