I'd hate to say it but Those big chain restaurants in America...The Cheesecake Factory.

You can close your eyes and point at the menu and you'll find something you like. Can't remember the exact name but one that everybody seems to love is Pumpkin-spice cheesecake or pumpkin-pie cheese cake. It's cheesecake and pumpkin pie mixed. Good lord.

Who ever thought of combining pumpkin pie with a cheesecake should be able to live tax-free.

Pumpkin and cheesecake combined is definitely divine. If you're going with Cheesecake Factory I suggest the one that is pumpkin cheesecake with a layer of pecan pie. I'm personally not a big fan of pecan pie, but that combo is unbelievable!

Although it is not exactly cheese cake I really really love "Dresdener Eierschecke" (a local cheesecaky variety from Dresden). Of course, the best Dresdener Eierschecke comes from there. My friend from Dresden recommends any of the following bakeries:

Conditorei Hentschel
(several places all over Dresden plus a fleet of mobile trucks)

Matthias Graf
Alaunstr. 31, 01099 Dresden

Wippler,
Dresdner Str. 113, 01326 Dresden

Luckily for me I don't have to go to Dresden for Eierschecke, the bakery chain Steinecke sometimes carries some and they are right next door.

So this is totally 'promotional', but I figure it has a place here anyway (and am gambling the overlords will see it as being a genuine response to the thread under the heading "at my place") ;) as after lots and lots of requests for it from people who've tasted it, I finally got around to putting my recipe for cheesecake online.
The end result isn't as good as the cheesecake I've tasted at the restaurants I've listed in this thread, but it easily beats what you can buy at the cheesecake factory.

Plus, hey, it makes for a great excuse for bumping up this thread and seeing if there won't be more recommendations still. :)

My wife doesn an AWESOME cheesecake.

Let me know if you want the recipe, and she said that if ever you are in Sydney to contact us and you can come over and sample some. It's worth it!

Ooh awesome. I'll be around next year (supposed to be in Melbourne in September 2010, so will probably drop by in Sydney just before or just after). ^_^

Dafna's Cheesecake Emporium in Liverpool is pretty spectacular!!!!!!!!! Lemon cheesecake is probably the best desert in the world.

Dafna's is my local purveyor of all things cheescake and i am happy to confirm that she does indeed take some beating and is always happy to bake by request for those fans seeking a more unusual cheescake fix.

However, this thread has broadened my horizons and now, with the true potential of my travel plans fully revealed to me, i definately plan on hitting the reccomended Australia and New Zealand locations

I'll happily take you up on that, James. I'm most probably returning to Australia in 2010 as well, so Sander and I will come around and try your wife's cheese cake then
