You can totally skip Atlanta. Nothing worth seeing whatsoever (which can't be found in any other American city as well), other than lots of streets named "peachtree something". *g*
I'd recommend Philalphia if you want another American city in the east to visit. Better yet, drop Miami too and spend some days in San Francisco instead. :)

Listen to Sander, San Francisco is the place! Do you really want to see Chicago? I never found much of a party scene in Chicago! The West Coast is far better (Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, San Diego, Las Vegas are tops!) If you insist on the E. USA, why not New Orleans?

Another possibility would be either Nashville or Memphis. Nashville is the "country-music" capital of the US--and has some interesting spots both near their Opryland area and near the river downtown. Memphis has the famous Beale street--famous for barbecue and great jazz, and Graceland (Elvis Presley's old home) is a museum just south of town.

Personally, New Orleans would be my first choice too for a tourist city--but Nashville and Memphis would be my next choices--and both would be preferred over Atlanta--which while being the business center of the south doesn't offer much unless you plan to spend your time entirely in bars and dance clubs--I will admit that Georgia girls are very cute and lots of fun. Having said that, Bourbon Street in New Orleans is crazy, crazy and rocking all year around--and the food and sights are both great--rivaling (and possibly beating) that in New York , Las Vegas, and San Francisco.

Enjoy

I agree, Atlanta can totally be skipped. Nashville, Memphis, and New Orleans definitely top it, and I also might suggest Savannah, though it's a smaller town, it definitely has that southern feeling. Not saying that Savannah would top my personal list of places to go, but I would choose it over Atlanta. Good luck!

I spent a day in Atlanta and it was enough, more than enough in fact.
Olympic park is nice but not as nice as it used to be.
Coca Cola world is an option.
As is the aquarium (Which has reduced entry an hour before it closes)
CNN tour is kinda cool too.

Sander is indeed correct.
San Fran is the place to try, it's awesome, truly truly amazing.

I enjoyed Chicago big time but then again i was there for the Taste of Chicago festival and 4th July weekend so that helped alot.
Plus i'm a white sox fan.

I almost always say "listen to sander" as I almost always agree with him

but not this time.

I do not know anything about atlanta other than braves baseball, coca-cola, and that giant aquarium so I can't really say.

but if you are looking for a good party scene....DO NOT SKIP MIAMI! infact if you have the time I would stay a few extra days there. Miami is glorious. Beautiful women everywhere, beautiful beaches, so much culture, great food, clubs everywhere. Go to the beach on miami beach where it's less crowded and party on south beach.... It's awesome.

take a bus to philly (my hometown) from new york (it's only an hour and a half) for a day then get on a bus and go to the D.C./Baltimore area (another two hours away) the inner harbour at baltimore is pretty cool plus their aquarium is top notch. and then D.C. has a great party scene. then fly to miami.

*g* In my defense, I have no personal experience with Miami; it was the next city to drop off the list in favour of San Francisco since I'd never heard any tales about it at all (neither positive nor negative), while I've heard (or experienced) lots of good on each of the other cities. :)

So, Afrodiziac, I'd now like to amend my original reply to:

"Better yet, drop Boston too and spend some days in San Francisco instead. :)"
