Hey Lucy

Thailand is a great place to start your travels. Of all the places I've been it's one of the easiest for a novice backpacker. I'd suggest flying into bangkok and then getting heading down to koh phanag on the train or bus (you can get all the tickets from any travel agent that litter Koh san road in bangkok).

koh phangan is a great place for anyone who's young and loves to party, it also has some beautiful beaches that the prices are still fairly reasonable. Even if beach parties aren't your cup of tea there are many quieter beaches around the island.

Koh samui might be worth a look depending on your style but I personally find it to be a little dirty and seedy for my tastes. It does have some nice beaches though (assuming you don't mind being crowded in some places)

If diving is something you enjoy and even if it doesn't koh tao is worth a visit. It's very similar to koh phanag except smaller. It also is one of the best places to drive in Thailand.

The above three islands are all on the same side of thailand but off the other cost is Phuket and Koh phi phi. I'd skip the former unless you're a 50 year old who likes young thai girls. Koh phi phi is worth a visit though. It's a very nice little island with some beautiful sites and amazing beaches. The only down side to phi phi is the high prices found there.

Railey beach is another of my favorite destinations. it's near krabi and attached to the mainland although it does require a boat to reach it. There are some great prices and beaches to be found here although the party scene is much much quieter (this suits a lot of people). The beach last I saw it was one of two extremes- the hotels were either very high end 5 star plus or backpacker budget orientated joints.

Although many people who go to thailand don't see anything but the sout and the islands the north is decent in my opinion one of the best parts of the country. Chang mai and Pai are absolutely beautiful and the prices are exceedingly reasonable. Also the locals tend to be friendlier I've found here, probably as they haven't been alienated by as much tourism.

There are absolutely tons of tourists in Thailand so you won't have any trouble finding traveling companions. The thai people are for the most part very gentle and helpful. Also most speak enough english to get by in the typical backpacker areas so communication isn't a problem

I am probably just going to stick to Asia this time. Where are you planning on going?

Hi, my name is Lucy as well

I'm planning on going travelling and was supposed to go with my friend but due to exam results she might not be able to come, so i'll be going alone and the thought scares me to death i know i'll be fine once i meet people but just getting there is very daunting.

I'm thinking of going, San Fransico, Hawai, New Zeland, Oz, Singapour, Bangkok and Dubai

Any helpful tips or anything please

Thanks xxxxxx:)

Cool, hope you have a good time when u decide on your final plans. Im off to South Africa to do some conservation programmes with the wildlife, one for 4 weeks in Kruger National Park and the other one in a priavte game reserve near East London, so looking forward to them

Sydney is awesome. If you make it down there you will immediately feel comfortable there. great public transportation, it's impossible to get lost there. every neighborhood is safe and interesting...King's Cross, bondi, Coogee, Manly, Darling harbour, the CBD, Glebe, Collaroy...they're all nice and easily accessible. You'll meet tons of people too.
