There are quite probably some cheap flights, but I am no expert on them so will let others answer that.

For trains, however, you have a couple of options. Most sensible options:

- leave Zurich 18:16 to Munich, then night train to Budapest (jny 14.5hrs)
- leave Zurich 18:10 to Stuttgart, then night train to Budapest (jny 15.25hrs)
For both of these, buy tickets separately NOT together online via German Railways and cost can be as little as 48euros. These tickets are self print at home.

- Leave Zurich 22:40, direct night train to Budapest (jny 13hrs)
You can book this online via Swiss Railways but you'll have to collect your ticket in Zurich. You might also have to do it via email enquiries to them. This ticket will also be cheaper if buy a ticket on the same train from Zurich to Vienna, then in Vienna get out of the sleeping carriages and walk back a couple of coaches and then get in the day carriage to Budapest. This requires 2 separate tickets, but will save you money (and as you get to vienna after 8am, you don't need to be in sleeping accom any longer). You can get a Zurich-Vienna ticket for 30euros, for example, using their special offer.

- Leave Zurich 07:40, change in Feldkirk and then Vienna (both of these are easy changes). Jny 13hrs. The bonus of this one is you get to see the glorious scenery between Zurich and Salzburg, which you would miss at night
For this, book with Austrian railways, but book in sections: Zurich-Wien, and Wien-Budapest.

In all cases, providing you are booking well in advance, and picking fixed travel dates, the price should not be more than about 75euros, whereas if you just turn up and buy, a single ticket is likely to cost you about 110euros.

Hope that helps
