I got a job at the airport this week and I get free flights so I plan to take full advantage. Anybody have any recommendations of some cool cities I can check out in a day? I am planning to see Chicago, Toronto, NYC, and Montreal, but I'll need more than a day for those probably so I'm looking for those lesser known cities to check out. I live near DC by the way and work at Dulles.
Here's a map of where I can go: http://www.airwis.com/routemap.htm
Cool job. The cities you listed are musts, for sure. I'd add New Orleans to the list, as well as Mephis, Nashville, Savanah and Boston.
I don't think there is a city you can "see" all of in a day. However, that wouldn't stop me from going to these places for a day anyway. After all, you can go back for another day in the future.
Charleston, SC, and Charlottesville, VA are nice places to visit and could probably be seen in a day. Santa Fe NM, also, but it doesn't look like you can visit there according to your map. St. Augustine, just south of Jacksonville in Florida is also a really nice town and good for seeing in a day. Have fun exploring!
New Orleans has great night life.
For great Day Life: San Francisco. Suspecting you arrive in the AM at SFO you can take BART (public transport) to 16th and Mission station (get off) and find many cheap breakfast places. Get back on Bart and get off at Civic Center and walk east up Market Street (at 10:00am) if you are near Powell walk north and check out the shopping. Continue east on Market to the bay aka Embarcadero. Lunch time? jump on the F train (MUNI -- Public Transportation -- save your transfers) to Castro and walk around until you find a place you want to eat at, but check out as many places as you can.
Done with lunch... find the Divesadero bus line (ask any bus/train driver or local -- they will help) and get off at Haight... walk west on Haight to GG Park and buy some bud (dont forget papers) smoke in the park and chill for the afternoon. Go back to Haight and catch the 71 outbound to 9th ave and walk south to irving in the Sunset find a cheap place for dinner. Walk west to 19th ave. Catch the 28 to Daly City Bart. At Daly City Bart Catch to SFO and fly home.
In San Francisco save those transfers as they are good for hours and hours to save you $$$.
p.s. come back because you only covered 25% of SF.
