Hi Nisa,

To be honest i think your cheapest option would be to fly.

I went over land from Hong Kong to Hanoi a few years ago and caught the sleeper train from Guangzhou to Nanning (on the China/Vietnam border) crossed the border on foot and got a bus to Hanoi.
You would then have to travel from Hanoi over in Laos and down to Luang Prabang.

Taking everything into consideration (Food, accommodation, transport etc) it would be cheaper to fly as i said. However, if you are after a bit of adventure i reccommend going overland.

Be aware that when you leave HK and venture into China (Guangzhou) the number of people that speak/understand english dramatically drops and i recommend getting a ''point it'' book (google it if you haven't heard of them) as looking back it would have really helped me :)

Hope that helps.

You wont a lot of English phrases to buy tickets and sleep til you get to Nanning.

HK to LP

You should skip Guanzhou and go to Guilin from Shenzhen.
from there you can take a train to Nanning... stay in Guilin for a few days.

Hanoi to Vientiane, and then to LP.
