Hello,

I am thinking about backpacking some of the Baltic States mainly Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia. I was just wondering if any one has backpacked the area and was it enjoyable? Is it better to travel the baltic States by bus or train?

Hi,
I did some of Estonia about three years ago and did all of my travelling by bus as it was really cheap and the buses seemed to go everywhere. I really enjoyed myself in rural Estonia and met some great people there - the beer ain't bad either. Tartu is a university town with a good student buzz about the place and I stayed there longer than I intended to. Having said all of that, the thing is I speak ok Russian so if I ever had a problem I could 'quietly' speak to an older citizen and ask advice. Language can be a bit of a barrier in the Baltics, even with some of the younger people.
But, as I've mention I had a great journey around a very pretty and rural country and the people made it even more special.
