Hi,

I want to get to India by land or sea. I'll be coming from Turkey
and plan to travel through Iran. As I don't want to travel through
Afghanistan and Pakistan is there a boat that leaves from Iran,
Oman or UAE to India?

Thanks for the help.

Keith

As far as i know there is no passenger lines going from these places to India. Maybe you could try via freight/cargo ship? Because of competition with airlines its not lucrative anymore for ferries to stretch these distances.

No boat.

Is there a specific reason you want to avoid Pakistan? From what I heard it is still possible and not really that dangerous to go via Pakistan to India.

If you are determined an alternative route could be Iran-Turkmenistan-Usbekistan-Kyrgystan-China-India. But getting all these visa will be hell and the route is not that much safer than a quick dash through Pakistan.

I'd actually love to travel through Pakistan.

Maybe I just need to do a bit more research for that part of the journey.

The advice is appreciated. Thanks t_maia.

As t_maia said it is indeed relatively safe to travel through Pakistan (it is way more stable now then say 6 months ago when there were elections). The Pakistani are extremely friendly and helpful. If I were you I would just do it. From Taftan (at the border) you can take a bus to Quetta in 14 hours. In Quetta you can take a train to Lahore. If you are adventurous you do this, Pakistan is awesome, I have been there 3 times (last time 6 months ago;)).

wouterr tells you something important - the situation in this region can change drastically quite fast. If you are on the road for longer (say, 4-6 weeks or more) I can recommend investing into a special little radio (world reciever) that allows you to listen to a channel like BBC World and get news in English or your native language even in remote spots. If possible go to an internet cafe regularly and when you write emails or blog entries check the latest news. Get and stay in contact with other foreign travellers.

Another safety measure to take is that you do not hang out in places for long. There have been insulated incidents where people have been kidnapped for ransom in both Iran and Pakistan near the border to Afghanistan, this happened to a cyclist and to somebody travelling alone on a motorbike a few years ago. Stay on the move, be careful what you tell people about yourself, avoid being predictable - do not give anybody a chance to organise your kidnapping. The risk is quite low IMO, but it helps if you are on guard and work towards making it even lower.
