I am travelling to Thailand on the 1st April and was wondering if you think I will have enough time / is it worth it (considering all the travelling) to go south to the islands for a week then try to get to Nong Khai in time for Songkran? (on the 13th)
Considering the time you have I would suggest you to go to a travel agency and to book a nightbus to the south! It might look a bit silly when everybody board the bus with a colourful sticker on his chest, but if you'll go on your own by public transport it will take you much longer!
I had planned to get the night train from Bangkok, but from what i've heard the bus seems to be quicker.
Each island/bus gets its own sticker. I.e. Koh Samui red, Koh Tao yellow etc. It's a bit silly and it looks like a herd of sheep in Scotland, but finally you'll arrive at your destination pretty easily.
Go check out the rail site seat61, excellent information on teh thai trains available
6 days is perfect for some beach time. You basically have either the Krabi side or Samui. You can fly to both or take an overnight bus. Flights are cheap if booked in advance. Or take an overnight bus and save one night's accommodation.
I vote for the Krabi coast, very scenic and cheaper than Samui.
Pattaya has a very lively week of Songkran. Closer than Nong Khai, might be worth a look.
yeah Krabi sounds nice I'm not too sure about Pattaya from what i've heard it seems like a bit of a sex tourism hotspot.
Pattaya is a very lively place, and yes, many guys go there because of the sex scene. But, you can have a great time over Songkran and pass on the go go clubs and many bars. Just be sure you want to go to water war because it can get hectic. I have some Pattaya Songkran photos in my gallery. If you want a week of good, wet fun, Pattaya is the place to be. And who knows, you just might meet Ms. Right, or more likely, Ms. Right Now!
