Indonesia

A terrific opportunity just presented itself by way of a Singapore Airlines travel trade flight offer and I have the chance to fly to Indonesia for a greatly discounted rate.

The only trouble is I would only have 2 weeks to spare and as this is likely to be my one main 'holiday' of the year I would like to chill for a week on a beach. That leaves a week for some sightseeing.

In 2 weeks I would like to fly into Jakarta and out of Bali. Borobodur and Mt Bromo would be on the list as well as some time to chill on the beach in Bali. What else should I try to see in Java?

I am fairly well=travelled and have been to most of south east asia. This would be my first trip to Indo.

I will be travelling on a budget. Also it will probably be May or June that I travel - will the weather be ok and do ferries run daily between java and bali?

Wow, you are lucky!

Ok my suggesion is fly into Jakarta and stay one night then head on the day time train to Yogyakarta to do Borobudur, so you will need 2 nights there as it is a sunset tour which is the best option. You can then go overland to Mt Bromo (about a 12 hour journey in minibus) and overnight it there. You then have two options you could make your way to Surabaya and get a flight to Mataram (Lombok) and head for the Gilli islands - the best beach option in Indonesia in my opinion and have a reasonable amount of time there and overland it back to Bali for your flight out. OR instead of the flight you can go overland to Bali. Ferries run reguarly every day from Java to Bali so no worries there but it is a long journey from Bromo to do Java-Bali...it took us 15 hours last year on the same route. I think the flight to Mataram then overland back to Bali would be a better option - gets you on the beach faster that way!

May or June is perfect weather in Indonesia, high season actually so you should get some nice beach weather.
