Going to Big Island, Hawaii

We are going to the Big Island, Hawaii on the 4 of March. The plan is to rent a car, travel around, hike and bike everywhere it is possible.
While doing my research, I was surprised to learn that the crime rate on the Big Island is high - especialy thefts from rental cars and mugging tourists.
Could you give me some safety tips?

yeah apparently it's no different than any other american city.

just the obvious stuff....blend in. and don't look like tourists. don't leave an ipod or camera sitting in an empty car. Take notice of the people around you, if you don't feel comfortable...get moving.
