Inca Trail & Amazonas trip

Hi everybody.

Im going to SA in a couple of weeks, from Norway. Im travelling alone, and its my first "real" travel (meaning not just holiday ) In SA I have about 9 weeks and the plan is to start in Buenos Aires, then go to Chile, Peru, before I head to Pipa, Brasil (just by Natal) to live with some friends there.

I really want to do to the inca trail and I have a couple of questions that I hope somebody can help me with.

1) Booking in advance or when you get there? That is the question.. I have heard and read different things. That you have to book in advance to get a place in a group, as it fills up many many months earlier. Also Ive heard its no problem, and that if you book the tour in Cucso, its a whole lot cheaper as well. Anyone knows?

And what about the backpack. Do you have to bring the backpack youre travelling with up the trail? Is it maybe possible to leave it in a hotel/hostel you live, and bring a smaller backpack?

2) My second question is regarding an Amazon trip. Im insecure what place/country to take it from. Im thinking Peru og Brasil, since there are countries Im going to. Any advice here?

Im going to do the Inca trail ca beginning of april, and the Amazonas after that. Anyone else doing these things that maybe want to meet up?

Here we go:

1) To take the Inca Trail you MUST book it in advance (2-3 months) with an agency. These are Cusco's govenment rules!
To visit the Machu Picchu ruins (Cusco-Aguas Calientes - Machu Picchu), and to go to the ruins taking other treks such as Lares or Mollepata-Salkantay, in these cases you can book your trek when you get there. Once again, for the INCA TRAIL you have to book it in advance!

2) You'd better take the Amazon trip from Peru. I am Brazilian and love our share of the forest, but from Brazil, tours are more expensive lol

I wish to do something similar but does anybody know if there is a direct flight Cuzco-Iquitos? I see that Lan only flies from Lima and buying tickets to Cuzco and then to Iquitos costs almost 1000 bucks each which is almost the same I would spend on the IT and Amazon tours. I heard that there are other domestic airlines in the country like Star and Busref or something like that. Any information on this regards will be much appreciated.

Did u get any response on ue request? Im thinking about doing an amazonas trip from iquitos, after machu picchu, so I have the same question..

Have you booked a trip yet, on either the trail or amazonas?
