hi, me and two of my friends are looking to travel from Cartagena in columbia to panama by boat... we are on a budget and were wondering if anyone has done this before for a reasonable price, or jumped on a boat for free. if so i would greatly appreciate advice and some tips on where to look or who to talk to about this sort of thing. thanks

You have not a chance of hopping on a boat for free in this direction. Unless you are a hot babe prone to wearing very small clothes. There is a slim chance going the other way because of crewing issues through the canal.
It costs, at this time, about 275 to make the sail with the many expats who make the run. There are dozens and they are easy to find. When you get to Cartagena, go into either the Hotel Holiday or the Casa Vienna and look at the boards there. Dozens on each board. The front desk clerk at either place can fill you in on who is trustworthy or not. My suggestion is to go to the Holiday for this info. Two good guys, Benjamin in the day and Robert at night, both straight shooters. Tell them Derek said hello.

Also be sure they're taking you to mainland Panama not just dumping you on Las Islas de San Blas-Hey it happens-but not if you're a hot babe.
Another option is to get as close to border towns between Panama and Colombia and hop from fast launch to fast launch until you get to a major town (not many to be had). Should cost $100+ US and you have to pay each individual boat maybe a 10er. Not comfortable and not so safe in places
thanks will look into it, cheers for the advice mate
