I will be doing a 14 days trip in California and am thinking of visiting San Francisco, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Yosemite National Park and if possible, Grand Canyon.
Can someone advise if
- its better to fly in and out via san francisco or LA?
- its possible to cover so many places in 14 days? I'm considering taking 1-2 domestic flights if necessary
- its easy to drive around? I'm going with 2 other ladies and none of us have experience driving overseas, let alone right hand drive
Many thanks in advance!
I would recommed flying into LA. If you travel up the coast from there to SF, on to Yeosemite, down again to the Grand Canyon/Vegas and then back to LA.
I think (but am open to correction!!) that would make the best sense. The drive to SF is amazing and about a half a day (give or take how long you want to stop along the way for). I would suggest that rather than flights if you have time.
Perhaps fly from SF to Vegas after visiting Yeosemite (which is maybe 7 hours from SF). And then fly again from Vegas to LA. Though I think you could drive some of those distances its really up to how your budget and your time scale. Planes take less time but will add a fair bit to your budget! That said it might be worth it if you think you will be nervous about driving (I still say drive from LA to SF though, real California feel to that trip). I'm not a brilliant driver but once you've given it a go I think driving in the states is a lot easier than UK, roads are wide etc. So worth considering.
I hope this helps! Any questions let me know
Last year I spent about 2 weeks travelling california. I flew into SF, spent a few days here before heading down to LA, then across to Vegas (which is amazing) and then down to San Diego before lying out of LA ro fiji.
I found that 2 weeks was just enough time and allows you about 3-5 days in each place you want to visit. We travelled around on the greyhound buses, which was a pretty good experince. They are cheap and reliable....and you get to meet some strange and wonderful people on them
Have you considered catching the train from SF - LA....i believe its called the Amtrak and the scenery is ment to be amazing.
We enjoyed every city we visited, as they were all very very different. My favourite was San Fran, and if you do go make sure you do the bike ride of the golden gate bridge into the forest. It's one of the best things i have done on my travels to date.
If you want any advise on places to stay, or things to do let me know.
Yep, that amtrack journey is stunning and I would say do it if you have time (I think it's a good 16 hours between LA and SF).
Greyhound is a special experience, amtrak is definately more luxurious
