I will be arriving in Bangkok airpory approx 8am and then leaving (on a train to Chiang Mai) the following day so i have only got 2 days to see as many sights as possible. I have read about the wonderful traffic that lies in wait for me in Bangkok so with this and my time restraints were would you recommend the best area to stay for the night i am there. I want to see the main attractions and avoid wasting time in traffic if possible

Thanks

Hi

Sukhumvit Road or Silom Road are recommended, stick on sky train and subway only. Absolutely fast!
there are another option is motorcycle taxi which you can find in many spots in BKK but I think it's too risky for Farang like you.

I agree with Modsri. Stick to Silom or Sukhumvit and the Skytrain.

Isn't Sukhumvit where there is a very undesirable area - Nana??

Forgive me if i am completely wrong but i's sure i read that somewhere

Yes, Nana is pretty undesirable area, a kind of low budget motels/hotels and "special women".

But if you go further up, there are many hotels which is nice, such as Westin, Sheraton, Emporium Suite, Novotel etc...
Or Siam Square and World Trade Center, there are some hotels which are not high in rate such as Anoma, Amari Watergate and Novotel Lotus (walking distance to sky train)

Sukhumvit is a VERY long road. In fact I think it goes all the way to Pataya (is that right Modsri?). So of course there are some undesirable places along it, but there are also nice places. Silom road is also a long road and Patpong is along it, with the girly bars, but also the Patpong Market. It is a long road so lots of things are on it. Don't be put off by a few undesirable places along the way.

Yeah, some parts of Sukhumvit Road will have some bars but tens of thousands of people walk by these places every day and no one ever forces someone into a bar. You will probably find more crudeness and nudity on a beach back home than on a street near a bar. Inside the bars behind closed doors is something else!

Lots of malls, restaurants, street vendors and reasonably priced hotels on Sukhumvit. Best of all you can hop on the Skytrain and make it to many other parts of the city.

By the way you have bars in Chiang Mai too!

Good luck.

If you are going to Chiang-Mai, get yourself a cheap AirAsia flight. You'll be there in an hour so more time in Bangkok.

Can't you cut out an extra day from Chiang-Mai to spend in Bangkok?

How much do you want to pay per night? What does "cheap" mean to you?

No Skytrain in the Khao San Road area by the way!

Plan to spend your last night in Bangkok so you don't have to worry about last minute connecting flights being late or missing your ride back home somehow.
