After the succesful photography competition, there is now the first Travel Guide Competition
So, if you want to win a hundred bucks, come on and help us out here;)
Since it is already the 16th of February (the day you can start), I thought I'd start a thread about it.....probably not so good as one of the overlords here could do, but sometimes you have to help out a little;)

Have fun everybody

Just posted this up yesterday and didn't get time to post about it in the forums, so good to see you doing the honours, Michael.:)

Should be interesting to see what kind of articles come out of this competition. One clarification: the prize is a $100 accommodation voucher for use on Travellerspoint.

Cheers,
Eric

You're welcome Eric;)

By the way, what was not exactly clear: if I add for example 5 articles with 2500 characters each, do I increase my chance of winning by 5?
Also, does it matter if you add 2500 or 5000 characters...does it increas the chance by 2?

Ah, good questions. I just tried to clarify this in the main comp page. Basically, you get a maximum of 3 entries. So you could write 5 articles at 2,500 characters each, but you only get to enter three times.

Each entry has to be for a new article, so 5,000 characters on one article doesn't count as multiple entries.

Cheers Eric!
Good thing I guess, to give everybody a chance

Apologies for adding my Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park entry onto the competition page. I didn't read carefully enough the competition entry page where it said you had to be the one to start the article, and because there wasn't too much info on the page I just assumed that it counted. Also the national park is listed on the UNESCO World Heritage Sites: Natural list as something that counted for the competition, so I guess so there's no confusion it should probably be taken off, but I've added some more info to it now anyway. :)

No worries.
I asked by PM to add a link at the left side, just like the photo competition. I guess that could draw numerous more editors, because now you have to go to the toolbar 'travelguide' first to see the option to win 100 bucks. Also herr bert came with that idea in another thread here.

personally, I would see anyone contributing good info in one single existing article of at least 2500 characters (just like you) to join the competition as well.

I know I have some opinions which are not joined by anyone, but basically the suggested articles are not anyone's cup of tea;)

I think it would draw more people if any article is good (not just the suggested.) As I believe the intention will be to have more information available.

My other suggestion (other topic) had more to do with finding the travel guide, if you get to the TP site. I think that almost everybody who is new to this website will miss it.

I guess I count as staff?! shame...should probably start contributing again anyway....

Fair comment regarding the visibility of the comp, or lack thereof. I've noticed quite a bit more activity since we popped the banner ad up on the guide page, but obviously that still requires people to go to the guide page in the first place. I'll suggest to Peter that we create a small ad to pop in the sidebar, where it can alternate with the photo comp ads.

I completely agree that the guide in general needs to be more visible on the home page. This is on the todo list; just a matter of time. Hopefully sooner rather than later... I'll go pester the admin about it now:)

Regarding the type of contributions that count towards an entry, this is certainly something worth considering changing for future competitions. I think part of the goal was getting more people involved in the projects, but there may be a better way of doing this while still leaving it open for people to write other stuff.
