Don't even think about it.

Petra is not a day trip. First it takes far too long to get there unless you have a private jet and second it takes so much time to see the place that you need at least 1 night there.

I think if you are starting out from Dahab or Sharm you can make it to Petra in one day, but it takes careful planning. You can either take the bus to Taba and go via Eilat (Israel entry stamp, beware!) or take the bus to Nuweiba and catch the ferry to Aqaba. From Aqaba you continue with bus or private taxi. This way Sinai-Petra-Sinai will take about 4-5 days, 2-3 days travelling and 2-3 days visiting Petra.

Note that if you intend to return to Cairo after your trip to Jordan you should be careful to get a "come back" stamp when leaving Egypt, if you don't you either have to apply for a new visa to Egypt at the consulate in Aqaba or you need to fly from Amman to Cairo. The reason is that people entering Egypt via the Sinai get a "Sinai-only" entry permit at the border, not a full visa to Egypt.
