reserving room during full moon party & is it worth it?

Travel Forums Asia reserving room during full moon party & is it worth it?

Hi, Im going to Thailand with a friend from march 2nd to april 2nd. Full Moon party is March 10th.
A friend warned me that it is really difficult to find a place to stay during full moon season and that I should reserve a room.

I want to stay in walking distance to the full moon party so I can stumble home wasted and not have to worry about getting a taxi or whatever. I found a bunch of places online to reserve a room but the prices are spiked up much higher than usual because of the full moon and they require you to make a reservation for a minimum of 5-7 days. I want to stay at a place called Coral Bungalows which I heard is great based on these forums. The only rooms I can reserve are for 1500 baht, my opinion def not worth booking.

My questions are:

If i show up 3-4 days before the full moon is their a chance I can find a place on sunset or sunrise beach near the full moon and for cheap rates? Do i even want to get a room that close to the party? What if I were to get a place on the opposite side of the island, is it a pain in the ass to travel from one side of the island to the other? should i wait till after the full moon to visit Koh Phangan so the rates of places will go down.

and lastly is the full moon party live up to all the hype that it gets?

appreciate your help.

In my opinion...which is just that an opinion staying near the party is not great! I mean it depends what your looking for, if places serving western food and showing family guy is what you fancy before and after the party then yeah go for it and i woul reccomend booking somewhere! the other option is to stay on somui and you can get a boat over in the evening and one back the next day and actually spend time on phangan when the partys over to get cheaper room rates?

I stayed on a beach called hadd salad, it was beautiful and would reccomend it, the bungalows were called smile beach i think they were 5 mins walk and had ac and fridges private bathrooms, and werent expensive at all. the guys that ran the place offered a taxi service to the full moon for 150 bhat and if i remember correctly after all the buckets of whisky it cost us 200 bhat to get home at 11am the next day LOL!

Hope this helps!

Last time i visited Koh Pahang, i stayed about 4 beaches (20 mins drive) away from Had Rin, where the FMP is held. There are taxis (tuk-tuks) driving all night up and down the roads leading to the party beach, so that isn't a problem. We went down about midnight and found a tuk tuk in 30 seconds on the main road. We left the beach at about 8am the following mornign and again there are loads of tuk tuks to drive you back to your resort.
You just have to spot the tuk tuk that is going in your direction.

It is also alot nicer to be based away from all the madness, not to mention cheaper.

I didn't bother going to any official FMP's as while I was on Koh Phi Phi there was full moon parties, half moon parties, quarter moon parties etc. I expect the official ones are great but why bother as they are just for tourists anyway. You will always find parties on islands in Thailand so in my opinion I would rather go to a less commercial party and spend less money and still have a great time.
