jbmac has indicated that this thread is about Mexico

Many of us think that Mexico is a good vacation destination, and for most people it probably is. Our family did not have a good vacation at the Occidental Grand Xcaret Mexico. WHY you ask? Our 8 year old son vanished off the face of the earth at approximately 11:30am. Brent and his 2 sisters were snorkeling in a small salt water pool when Brent was violently pulled into a 12" underwater, uncovered pipe. The force was 600 psi.

Hotel management played the game of the "missing child" with us for 20 hours. I was convulsing with fear while management plotted their game plan. They knew where Brent was, but allowed him to stay in the pipes until they could remove him in the middle of the night under the cover of darkness.

At 9:15am--the next day the manager told me that they found Brent in the pool, but refused to discuss any details.
This tragedy was handled as awful as one could imagine;management lied, showed no compassion, and appeared to care less that they have now shattered a once very happy family.

I'm terribly sorry for your loss - what a horrible thing! I hope you find some justice.

Why is the State Government of Quintana Roo unable to locate the guilty party that stole the life of 8 year old Brent Midlock? Brent was killed by gross negligence and lack of maintence of the resort's salt water swimming pool on April 26th, 2003. The State just finished their 2nd investigation with depositions that contradict each other, misinterpretations, and lies. The family nor the guests that aided in the search for Brent were ever contacted even tho all of the information was given to the State Attorney General.

So what is going on? You take a 4 day vacation with your 3 children, and come home with 2 alive. There is concrete evidence that Brent nor his family is guilty of anything, but the Occidental cannot state that truthfully. Our son was our friend, our love, our baby, and a BIG part of our life and if ANY Government thinks that they are going to dismiss us as if a dog were hit by a car. We can positively assure them that this case will NOT go away until justice is served for stealing a happy, healthy, little persons life and destroying what was once a very happy family. The absence of Brent in so many lifes is pain beyond comprehension. A MUST READ google.com brent midlock and
www.brentmidlock.com.

When you knowingly betray an innocent child's life you must be lacking qualities of the heart, soul, and spirit...what do you have if you don't have those qualities?

Ditto for the Intercontinental Presidente reaort in Los Cabos.

Our son as the first to Jump in their swimming pool and was electrocuted by a pool light as we watched helplessly. After spending the better part of the morning in the clinic we were interviewed by the police who had been to this point under the impression that he had drowned. When they went back to the hotel it was necessary to argue with the management about shutting down the pool for safety. Finally they did but the police left a guard there to make certain they conformed.

We were not allowed to leave the country with our son until we signed a death certificate that the cause was an accidental drowning.

It's unbelievable what we are told by travel agencies, after his death the rating by Expedia never changed. These multi national corporations are exposing many travelers to conditions that we believe to be safe because of the rules and regulations of our own country.

Before you travel ask specifically how the safety of thgese resorts is determinted

We, who have experienced these tragedies really need to get our stories and warnings out there. I won't rest until I figure out how.

Unfortunately the Brent Midlock tragedy is not an isolated incident. The more I research tragic vacation deaths in 3rd world countries I am amazed at how many there have been. Just Three weeks ago we lost our 11 year old son in a drowining while on a jeep safari tour in the Dominican Republic. The tour was being sold at Jack Tar resort in Puerto Plata, the tour company was licensed by the Minsistry of toursim, the tour was advertised as being safe for children, even those that could not swim. My son was the strongest swimmer in our family but the heavy rains made the waterflow over this one particular waterfall more turbulent than normal and an undertow sucked him under. The 5 tour guides present did not jump in immediately, and when he was pulled out after 10 minutes, attempts to resucitate him by other tourists failed. My 9 yr old daughter and 13 yr old son and wife screaming in horror. The tour company lawyer suspiciously immediately met us at the hospital and handled all hospital and police communications. The police report later said Adam drowned while swimming with his father, mentions nothing about the tour or the tour company, a total cover-up. Staff at Jack Tar did not know anything about my sons death, and could you beleive it , the same tour company was on the beach the next day still selling that same tour and still telling parents it was safe for children. I tried to intercept as many families as possible, and have my own video footage of my discussions with these tour operators. To make a long story short, the all-inclusive vacations are great, and expensive , and we get first world luxuries in the resort. We tend to worry about whether the resort is 3 star, 4 star or 5 star, but fail to realize that just outside the walls of the resort, 3rd world dangers exist, no safety laws, poor hospitals, and police corruption and cover up. Money is being made by these resort owners and I don't know why the cities they are located in can't get a peice of the pie and improve on safety, health and security. Greed, greed greed, all fueled by us the tourists.
The Canadian Embassy has posted a warning about this tour, and will try to shut it down, but warned me that econimic incentives in 3rd world countries far outweigh safety, if anything they can implement a safety program in honour of my sons name , which I would be pleased with and be a part of. My mission is not complete.
Just be careful all of you and do your homework.
As to Brent's and Tomstoys parents, I know what you went through and I feel for you. Hope to talk to you some day, but I am not satisfied by posting messages on Travel Forums alone. We must do more.

Well after reading this thread, I immediatly looked it up. Not because of what happened, but because I know how this kinda thing works. So apparently, 2 years after this happened, suddenly this starts popping up in a bunch of travel forums. I have seen the same 3 posters in each and every forum and are on this one as well.

In these forums, the post quickly descended into name calling and rather rude posts. I would prefer that this would not happen here. Blaming Mexico wont help at all, and will not keep me or any other person from going (not claiming to know what everyone here thinks, just what I would guess). Traveling (no matter WHERE) comes with risks. Living comes with risks.

You (or the family at least if you are not one of them) seemed to be a very religious people. Well very religious people very often state that everything happens for a reason, namely God's will. I am very strongly against religion so I will not throw my ideals into it.

I simply dont want people to come in here and say things about an entire country based on a few incidents. I have recently come back from Mexico, and it was amazing. I was never once in fear of my safety, not anymore than I would be in my own home. Mexico is a wonderful place. It is beautiful, but you must remember that every rose has its thorns. People do get knifed, robbed, killed, and so on there, just as in America. Feel free to express your views, but dont throw out biased statements against countries. (this happened in the other forums one of which the moderator closed because a single person had logged onto with many different aliases and sent out vicious comments).

So flame me for being "heartless" and all that if you feel you should. But things like this happen all the time in America as well. Move on, its for the best.
