Trust me--it's a lot less intimidating than you think! I was nervous getting myself to NZ on my own a few years back, so I looked up airport maps, terminal-transfer times, etc. etc.... only to discover that, when transferring flight, I landed at one gate and left at the one right next to it. Anyway, just follow the signs and ask a lot of questions and you'll be fine.

just hope you don't sit next to a freak that constantly has to get up. the rest is fine.

you wont be the only nervous person on the flight so dont worry.

just take something to read, something to listen to, something to write on and it will fly past especially if you have a sleep.

try writing something meaningful about what you expect to see/do so you can one day look at it and see how it reflects what you actually did.

they will have on board entertainment like films, if you watch a film, that a 2 hour chunk gone before you know it, they will have a large selection.

also, try and make yourself really tired so you can sleep a big section of it, try and make it fit in with the time you will be landing so you can have a good first day. so maybe dont sleep the day before, so when you're no the plane you can have a good long sleep after Dubai or something.

you will be fine.

Nothing gets you through a long flight like a copy of the guidebook or some reading matter on the country you're going to.

Somehow I like flying alone more. I always get to talk more easily to other on the plane, guess it is just like travelling;)

I am not nervous about the flying itself although it is the worst part of my trip usually. I am nervous sometimes though that I will miss a connections or even worse: loose my luggage. Only happened once but they delivered it the next day in my hotel.

So just enjoy the fact you are going to a great places and indeed: read, watch movies and listen to music and the hours pass by quite fast sometimes

I was the same as you with my first flight alone. To be honest i've always been a lazy person and let others just do the hard bit and i kinda turn up and just go with the flow. So when flying i didn't pay much atention. This of corse worried me alot when it came to working out an airport and a transfer all on my lonesome. But you would be shocked just how well you can do things when you have to and you have to remember that airports do want you to know where you going ( i know you wouldn't think so sometimes ).

With regards to the flight you could be really lucky and sit next to someone interesting or unlucking and have to use the countless hours of movies and TV, mixed in with your books and music. I find the longest flights go qickly with all the entertainment you have around you !

Good luck and im sure your have a great time down under !

thanks for all the response people, i guess ill just keep having these mad moments of panic until i go but i'll remember all this advice and try my best to keep calm, i think the excitement of going will overide the nerves anyway .
like someone else said its more the missing flights/loseing luggage/changing flights im worried about rather than the actual flight. (although i keep hearing about plane crashes recently! 8/ )
