Hi,

I am planning on travelling the world at the end of the year and I want to buy a digital camera to record the experience. I was wondering if you could advise me on the best type of camera to suit my needs.

Basically what I want is
Camera that would fit in my pocket, take a decent photo and cost between 2 and 3 hundred euros.

any advice is greatly appreciated

cheers

Hi,
Try www.dcresource.com for digital camera reviews. It's an excellent site, but it based in USA, so you will then have to surf to find local prices.
You have to decide how important picture quality is, and how likely it is the camera might get damaged, and buy accordingly.
Also think about where you are travelling and how often you will come across Internet Cafes. They are pretty much everywhere now, but if you go off into the wilds for a few weeks, you will need large capacity memory cards.
Compact Flash Cards are larger, but a lot cheaper.
Sony Memory Sticks (especially the new DUO) are small, but incredibly expensive.

Hi Offwego,

Best advice I can give you….

2 to 3 hundred euros seems a lot of money to spend on a reasonably good digital camera, unless you are a ‘camera buff’. If you’re always on the move I’d be worried I might loose it or have it nicked! But that’s up to you….

My camera is an AGFA SP2 Only (2.0 million pixels) It has self timer and will take short moves as well. i- Cost me (on offer) £35 at Comet.
See the results in my Photo Gallery…. http://www.travellerspoint.com/member_photo_gallery.cfm?UserID=21690

The only reservations I have with this camera is that….
1) It is only really a daytime camera… Auto flash is not very good at more than 2 metres.
2) LCD screen is only 1.5"… Difficult to see in bright sun light.
3) Only 2x Digital Zoom.

I carry rechargeable AAA batteries and a charger and 2 x 64MB memory cards.
(Internal camera memory only 8MB)

For about 150 euros you should get a good camera (about 4.0 million pixles) with a decent flash, zoom and LCD screen.

Thanks a millon for the feedback, had a look at those websites and they are very helpful. Could anyone advise on a decent lightweight camera they have bought themselves that i could easily slip into my pocket.
I like the spec of the Canon A75 but it looks a bit cumbersome and I feel it might be a bit awkard to cart around.

Choosing you camera is difficult.

I think it's verry personal.

I use a Ricoh capplio rr30 (2 years old) and i like it for what it does. And for the normal work i use my Canon 10D and that is great.

Maybe have a look at the forums at www.dpreview.com and see what people say about the canon A75.

Greetings,
George
