So finally I have plucked up the courage to stay at the infamous Chungking Mansions in HK. I have always avoided it before because of all the bad reviews but I felt strangely drawn to it and I am finally going to stay there just to see what all the fuss is about. Anyone here stayed there, and if so, does it deserve it's reputation?

Bwa, reputation...
Okay, the rooms are small (sic) and they are rather expensive compared to what you get, it can be hot inside all that concrete, you sometimes have to wait for hours on a elevator, you'll meet bleak types in this building and in case of a fire it is obviously not the safest place to stay.
But on the other hand they are very conveniently located, depending on which one you chose they are very clean and there are dozens of cheap restaurants around.

It's an experience!

i don't mind small rooms, it's what is to be expected in HK, I am on the 4th floor so I don't need to use the lift (it's why i chose this hotel), heat doesn't bother me (I'm on my way to the tropics) and to be honest I am rather looking forward to it. It is very well located and the whole hustle and bustle of the place looks great. Any good dim sum restaurants you can recommend in there?

A decent dim sum restaurant INSIDE the Chungking Mansions will be hard to find, on the other hand you'll find heaps of cheap Indian restaurants in the CM, tucked away between the fake Hindi movie shops...

Hehe, I love the way you think. With all the bad reviews, I just have to check it out myself LOL

Which property are you staying at? Seems like there's about 30 located in there from the list on the HK page ... quite curious to hear your feedback after the stay!

I'm staying at the Harbour Guest House and i will let you know how it was! Although looking at the list of hostels i kind of wish I had gone for the "Wang Fat" hostel, sounds intriguing!!!

The infamous Chungking Mansion? I choose the word, iconoclastic. I stayed there twice...
But I would never eat there. I can't even watch the last part of "Slumdogg Millionaire", the part when they were singing and dancing.

There is something sexy about that place. All the races in the world is in that place... And you'll see how diversity is beauty. But IF I HAD THE MONEY, I won't stay there...

The Mirador is the next best thing in the area.

We stay at Chungking Mansions everytime we go to HK...it really isn't that bad! It's a real experience, even if the rooms do feel like a men's toilet with the white tiles on the wall! It's cheap and almost cheerful.

For good Indian food, go to E block on the 7th floor to a restaurant called the Kyber Pass (try and get a discount card from the guy who waits on the ground floor to tempt people to go there). All the locals eat there and having recently been to India, it's some of the best Indian food outside of India we have had. Can't help you with the dim sum but if you want a good cheap lunch/breakfast try the numerous Cafe de Corals...good cheap Chinese food, the hotpots are especially popular!

I stayed there in 1990 and on the news was a report about what would happen if there was a fire there. If above a bad fire, your chances of getting out are about zero.
