Best option is the overnight bus: BKK to Krabi. You get into Krabi early am. Have BF in Krabi, then take the 10:30am ferry to Koh Lanta.

This happens a lot on the tourist buses. Almost all the theft reports are from visitors using the tourist or private bus system. They are convenient. All the travel shops will book you on the private bus system. They leave from their office or the shop will get you to the departure point. But, I would not trade safety for convenience and you should not either.

What you want are the gov't sanctioned buses that leave from a bus station. This is the bus system that the Thais use, so should you. You need to get over to 'Sai Tai Taling Chan', or the new 'Southern Bus Station' in BKK. No need to book in advance, just get yourself over to the bus station around 4:00pm and take one of the overnight buses down to Krabi. There are several levels of service: from a 24 seat VIP bus to fan buses. Your choice. You will arrive in the early morning.

You might want to consider using pac-safe to really deter theft. Good Luck with your planning.

Thats is probably the gov. buses which the locals use are more expensive than the buses you get from travel agencies in KSR.

See if there are any cheap flights on Air Asia, Nok Air or might be able to fly for the price of a bus and you have longer at your destination too!

I did a quick search on Air Asia, Nok Air and One -Two Go. You can fly down to either Krabi or Phuket for right at 2,000 baht, tax included. This is with a few days advance purchase. Not a bad option if you know what day you want to arrive in Koh Lanta. You save one night's accommodation with the overnight bus, not when you fly. Always good to have another option. Good Luck with your planning.
