2 months travelling up the East coast of Oz... from Melbourne to Cairns
6 weeks travelling around New Zealand

and finally 10 days in San Fran before heading home

my question is does anybody have any suggestions of a rough idea of how much money I should bring? we will mainly be staying in hostels.

Hi Im doing a similar trip except I am going from LA to NYC in the USA!
I am taking about £4,000 with me but I have already paid for a tour across USA so wont have to spend money on travel accomodation, breakfast or dinner!
I am also planning on working in Australia if I can. I know SE Asia is really cheap so Im planning on spending as little as possible there but I think some places in Australia can be expensive.

The simple answer to how much you shoudl bring is "as much as possible". Work as much as you possibly can before you leave, sacrifice as many luxuries you can and those luxuries you can not go without half the amount you spend on them. Every dollar you can save before you go is one dollar more of fun you can have on the trip of a lifetime.

Half the time you are in more pricey countries where $50US a day would be about the minimum spend and the other half you are in places where $20-25US will get you by. So if you are good on a budget I'd estimate $7,000USD (after the RTW ticket is purchased) as a minimum to have a decent time if you plan to stay in dorm rooms where it is possible. You could possibly get by with less, but you certainly would not be able to go out on the town too often on anything less. If you plan to get wasted every few nights then you may want to add another $1000USD or so on to that amount.
