I was in Rome for 8 days and really loved it. Their is so much to see over there, just take your time to appreciate it.
Obviously you should go to the Coloseum, the Forum Romanum, the St. Peter & vatican museum (those two will fill a whole day if you really like to see everything), the Pantheon and all those tourist places. Normally I am not such a big fan of touristic spots but in the end.. They are touristy for a reason.

If you want to leave the city I can advise you to go to Ostia Antica. It is a large archeological site; it used to be a roman harbour city. There are many buildings there that are preserved very nicely and you can see many original fresco´s amongst other things.
Maybe I am a little prejudiced because I am a huge fan of Roman history but I really enjoyed this place and it is less then 30 minutes by train to get there. I also remember having a picknick style lunch there just sitting on and in between old roman walls and floors, can´t get much closer then that.

If you are looking for a nice restaurant, in one of the smaller streets next to piazza Navona (halfway the square if I remember correctly) was an Italian restaurant that was cheap, with good service and delicious food. After we discovered it we ate there the rest of the week.

Another tip for a short visit is the Santa Maria Della Concezione, and especially the five rooms underneath the church because when the monks moved to this location they decided to bring the bones of their ´brothers´ with them. The five rooms underneath the church are decorated with those bones, even the lamps! It is a little gruesome but one the other hand very impressive as well.

Enjoy your time over there!
