Here's the bus route maps for Maui:

and here's the bus route maps for Kauai:

The jungle on Maui is on the famous "Road to Hana" and even past the city of Hana.

The jungle on Kauai is on the north coast, out past Princeville.

Both places are great--my wife prefers Kauai and I prefer Maui--but then I got injured on Kauai--so maybe that affects my decision.

There is surfing and scuba diving on both these islands--though the best surfing is on Oahu. Probably it is easier to surf and scuba dive on Kauai than on Maui--but I think the jungle is much more interesting--and extensive and accessible on Maui than on Kauai. No matter your choice, you will enjoy yourself.

hitchhike
seriously. it works
you can scuba/ snorkel almost anywhere
and there is this one reallllly good surfing place but i cant remember what its called.
as for hostels im sure there is but even better if you want something cheap is camping on the beach. theres this great lava beach that is prettty much isolated. i stayed there a few nights last time i went to maui we just bought a couple of cheap sleeping bags and slept under the stars. one mourning there were all these wild dolphins swimming right near us and they wanted us to come play with them so we got to go swimming with wild dolphins! it was amazing. and again i cant remember the name of the beach. i have a really bad memory.

sorry i got a little off topc but i hope i helped
