Egypt Car rental recommended for a family of 4?

Our family of 4 adults would like to go to Egypt the last week of April and first week of May.
15 nights.
Is renting a car an option from Cairo to the Western Desert and then to Aswan, Luxor and on to the Red Sea and ending in Cairo? It sems there are many tours but I get the impression there is very little self driving car hire in Egypt. Any (hairraising) experience in self-driving? I dont read Arabic, but I have driven a few times in Israel which has good roads and there are signposts in English.

I will answer my own question: After reading a few guidebooks and other information available, I believe it is not sensible to travel in a rental car on one's own in Egypt - especially for the first time there.
