I’m planning to take my wife for a surprise trip this summer to celebrate her 50th birthday and I find it hard to decide between Marrakech and Istanbul. Has anyone been to both cities?

Istanbul. Much more to do, unless you only plan on spending two days or so.
Istanbul is very warm in summer and a bit humid. Marrakech is even hotter but not humid.

Still, if it is suprise trip and you don't like it to be ruined by people I would definately say Istanbul again. Less hassle and Turkish people are just more genuine friendly compared to Moroccan, that's the way it is.

Istanbul. Very exotic. Plenty to see, spans europe and asia. The food. The shopping.

when is her birthday? if it is in june i would recommend cappadocia in Turkey. much more romantic and more beautiful. but if you want to visit a big city then istanbul is great too.
i haven't been to Marrakech, i can't comment on that

Istanbul definitely! I've been already 3 times there (last time this weekend )
A very beautiful city with lot of things to do on every wishes and budget.
I like more to be there in spring - it's not so hot and dusty. But anyway to choose between Istanbul and Marrakesh in summer... you should be ready to the really hot weather :)

Haha :) that's a really good idea and nice gift :)
I went to marrakesh and that's a really nice city. All people were really kind with us and I really want to come back.
-snip-
Hope you will enjoy marrakesh. Istanbul i can't give you information because i don't know this city but i would love to go.
Kind regards
Jérémy
