Hello there,

I am a 23 yr old Canadian who will be going arriving in Sydney, Aus on April 2nd. I'm wanting/going to ride my road bike from Sydney to Brisbane. I google mapped it at 996 km away. Has anyone done this before? Is my adventure idea impossible? I've also researched weather conditions and although it will be fall/winter-ish, it seems super mild compared to Calgary winters! I'm in pretty good shape and I think I could bike that distance in about 6 to 7 days. I appreciate all input (positive or negative, don't worry, I've got thick skin!) from anyone, thanks a bunch.

Sincerely,

Gord

I went to sydney April 1st last year and the weather was beautiful! granted it rained a little everyday but the temp was perfect. the oceans are empty too because apparently it's cold for them that time of the year. If you're from calgary you'll be sweating.

anyway I made it up to coffs harbour north of sydney around the end of may and I met a polish guy riding a bike north to brisbane. Everyone thought he was crazy but he was having a good time. he had a rack on the back of his bike and he just hung his bags over either side of his rear tire.

The weather was nice that time of the year. Exactly as you said, it's mild and only gets warmer as you head north. I don't see it being impossible but you have to plan a little more in advance and you'll probably have to stop in every town. Idunno how much you can bike in one day.

If you want to do the ride in 7 days you'll be riding about 142km each day so you'll be riding about 4 hours a day depending on your fitness level and speed. The road is pretty good the whole way up but is a bit narrow in sections and there are large trucks that travel up and down the highway so be wary of them.

I'd say you'll be able to do the ride but might extend the time so you've got time to stop and check the sights on the way.

Yeah you're gonna want to enjoy each town. I spent 3 weeks in sydney alone but once I started travelling I took the bus from sydney-coffs-byron-surfers-brissy and it took about 3 weeks. and I skipped a few towns too!

If you do that in 7 days you're gonna miss everything there.

I do see what you guys are getting at. I will be abroad for 6 months and decided to bike simply for the challenge. I am pushing the trek for 7 days 'cause I got some buddies who will be meeting me near Bris. I'm almost certain I will be able to check out the scenary once I am done the trek. Are the towns along the coast spaced quite far apart? You know, just for pit stops and what not. Thanks for the replies.

Another thing (last one, promise), does anyone have a link to or know the best route to take to Brisbane on a bicycle, thanks again. And no, not all Canadians ask this many questions. Payce!

Great Idea! I'm going Brisbane middle of April and fancy the whole cycling approach to getting around. Are you doing it for the exercise or for the experience of cycling from town to town?
