i know there have probrably been plenty of posts like this but i was just wondering where would you go on a round the world trip? or if you have already been on one where did you go?
i think i would want to go to:
ireland/ scottland/ uk (travel that area by train and boat)
greece then catch a boat to italy
france (travel in that area a bit by train as well)
the amazon rainforest/ brazil
the lesser antilles
a few places in africa (not sure where thought)
and a few more place.
what are your destinations?
Well, no plans whatsoever regarding an extended RTW trip and I do have visited many of the countries you mentioned, but here it is what I would do with 6 to 12 months:
Utrecht - Singapore overland: Germany - Poland - Belarus - Russia - Mongolia - China - Vietnam - Cambodia - Thailand - Malaysia - Singapore. Mostly by train, apart from buses between Saigon and Bangkok.
Than flight to Darwin, travel along the westcoast to Perth and than west to Sydney. All by car.
Stopover on some Pacific islands: Cook Islands, Vanuatu, Tonga and Samoa.
Fly to Easter Island and on to Chile.
Travel overland from Santiago to Bogota/Cartagena (with a week to the Galapagos) and from there fly home.
Definately agree with Radenka. If it was only on my route.. The standard RTW tickets steer clear from those countries most of the times, although you can do a lot overland of course in the first place. Central Asia should be great as well.
In fact, I guess a grand railway bazaar like Paul Theroux would be nice, just from Europe to Asia and back, visiting most of the countries. No planes needed
