Whereas I totally agree that the presence of McDs is very disturbing - whether in Kansas or Koh Samui, I don't really get the point of the OP as they've been here in Thailand for years.
What is interesting is how it seems that in Thailand KFC are much more popular with the locals.
As for "billions" of people liking McD's - well "billions" of people smoke tobacco too but tat doesn't make it "right".
Before prising market forces etc - it might be worthwhile looking at the tactics used by this company and the effects it has on both local employment and world environment before supporting this kind of business.

Another way to look at is that the locals are probably sick and tired of all the "Minnie Mao's" all over town and are looking forward to something new!
Did you take that photo???
MINNIE MAO, How many minnie mao's are there in the world?
No, I didn't take the photo.
Ever hear the Serenity Prayer? It's kind of runs along the lines of Buddhism.
"Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference."
I would like to add to it...
" ... and give me a sense of humor !!!!!!!!"
