My summer plan

Travel Forums Europe My summer plan

I'm planning a backpacking trip to Spain, Italy, France and Switzerland. On average I plan to stay in each country for 4 nights. I did asome researching and I have come to the conclusion that a night at a decent hostel, on average, will cost me around 40 CAD (am I right about this?). I have a place to stay for free in Switzerland. My EURAIL pass will cost about 450 CAD that will give me 6 days within a two month period of unlimited train use (thats what it seemed like the site implied at least). These costs put me at just under 1000 CAD. Now I have been told a plane ticket (there and back) will cost upwards of $2100, coming from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, with tax costing about $2400 thus bringing my total up to 3400 CAD.

I am wondering how much I will need to spend on food and drink? Additional costs I can expect to encounter? Are my estimates on cost accurate? Are museums etc. expensive?

A general request: could everyone please convert his local currency to the currency of his destination? Saves time.

I reckon €25 a night will be difficult to find, esp. in Italy. But maybe it's possible if you book early, travel in low season, or settle for really large dorms.

Beware of EUrail's fine print: more and more international overnight trains charge (hefty) surcharges. Check with rail companies to make sure.

If you budget €25 a day for food and excursions (excluding nightlife beyond a bottle of cheap wine in your dorm), that should be ample. The museums you're likely to be wanting to visit are expensive, but worth it.

4 days in each country isn't very long, I could quite happily spend all that time in one of those countries ( but thats just me) be careful to make sure you don't spend to much time travelling in between these countries rather then seeing these countries.

I know it isnt that long, I wish I cold stay longer. I am only 18 though, graduating this year and I will have about 6000 CAD to spend on air fare, hostels, food, nightlife and a train pass.

Would this suffice?

Yes I think you would have enough money i managed to stretch about 7000 aussie dollars out on a 3 month trip last summer so you should be fine, just remember all the money saving tips that everyone will tell you eg. try and only buy 1 meal a day eat in you hostel the other other 2. If your going to go out drinking make sure you drink in your hostel before you go out these 2 saved me a fortune whilst i was travelling
