Quoting Cool Paul

this question seemed to come up quite a bit when traveling. Being from Philadelphia my answer was always the same...

Will Smith

I don't know that this city will ever produce a more famous person.

Paul, I hate to disagree with you on Philly trivia, but I think the most famous person to come out of Philly in modern times would be Grace Kelly. She was born and raised in East Falls and then of course became an actress and after that Princess of Monaco!

but but Will Smith became the Prince of bel-air

I dunno.
You get about 74 million hits when you google Will Smith

And only 7 Million for Grace Kelly.

well, i guess its up for debate then! will smith v. grace kelly...i suppose we need paul to give us a little more definition for famous...longevity? current status? obviously will smith is going to generate more internet hits than grace kelly...from another era. i think i was thinking more along the lines of longevity and overall fame across many age groups...but I guess it all depends on the person you're talking to out there. btw, Philly also has Bill Cosby and Andrew Wyeth, and we are oh so lucky to also have Kevin Bacon, now of Bacon Bros. fame (played heavily on wxpn).

Melbourne has a nice long list.. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Melburnian

Aside from the ones Eric mentioned, I'm throwing in Eric Bana, Steve Irwin, Rachel Griffiths, Geoffrey Rush, Germaine Greer, Nick Cave, Shane Warne, Guy Pearce, Pat Cash and I think it's fair to add Bon Scott to that list, considering he emigrated here at the age of 6. (scrap that, he didn't live here that long before moving to Fremantle)

If I had to pick one as the most famous of all.. I'm just going to say Steve Irwin !

From Hurstbridge (the suburb where I live), the most famous is Peter Brock, one of Australia's best ever race car drivers.

And re: Rupert Murdoch -- yeah, quite a story. He started out with a small newspaper in Adelaide and grew that into News Limited, which until a few years ago was still an Australian company. Not anymore, for taxation reasons. Not sure he's much to be proud of, but oh well.

Well, Penrith in Cumbria so the list is pretty short. Wordsworth went to school there. Apart from that - Timmy Mallet's mother, I'm told. Uncle Monty?

Well not really a home 'town' but my home peninsula - the Wirral. The most famous person to have been born and raised there is Daniel Craig
