I am already planning a trip for early 2010 for 2 weeks (only time I can pencil off from work). I am very heavily debating between these two trip. Please let me know what your would recommend...
1) Belize and Guatemala (The Cayes, Cayo, Tikal, Lake Atitlán, La Antigua)
2) Colombia (Cartagena, Santa Marta, Bogota, and Medellín, any anything else you may recommend!).
Colombia is obvioiusly more city/culture centered. I do enjoy outdoor activities as well as culture and nightlife so this is why I am very torn.
Thank you in advance!
did u ever think of going to venezuela? its usually a 24 hour party atmosphere
Well, I can't give you the direct answer here, but I have a lot of knowledge of both places.
There is not alot of night life in the Cayo that is not backpacker oriented or out at the resorts. They DO have great music out at the resorts. The downtown core is fairly depressed, though you can still get a beer and have a laugh anywhyere there. There are lots of ruins around, and a horseback ride is always available.
The Cayes are fun fun fun. You gotta like diving though, or just sunning during the day as they are both on what amounts to sandbars, so there isn't much hiking involved. I love the Cayes. But they aren't cheap
Flores has really NO nightlife. Well, I remember one disco, but not very populated. Santa Elena has more, but a little rougher. Tikal is worth the time in Flores. And Guatemalans are excellent.
I would spend your time solely in Cartagena Santa Marta and Medellin if I were you. I have nothing against Bogota, which has GREAT night life....But it is cold and dreary there often and it is a big city with nothing of any special historical significance. The town, in my opinion, is not pretty. And you have only two weeks. Two weeks is a puff of wind. The other places are close to each other relatively and there is lots to do. Take a day or two out at Islas Rosario off the Cartagena coast. When in Santa Marta, you'll want to see Taganga. More of the bohemian vibe there. Cartagena night life is mostly on Arsenal street.
The beer. I prefer Belikins over Aguila, but the margin is slim. Actually, you throw Gallo in there, and CA beats SA hands down.
Okay, I sort of fall on the CA side. It is a little wilder there and I like that.
