Food in Malaysia is WIDE in Variety and TASTE due to its various races there.

Namely a) Malays b) Chinese and c) Indians

Real local food would , not surprisingly, require a local guide to show you and also bring you there. So a local friend is necessary. ( PS:- Has must have transport)

If you are staying in budget hotels/hostels or G.Houses then you best bet would be asking the locals there as walking distance becomes important.

Suggested local favourites

a) Rojak ( Mix fruits in Prawn Paste/gravy - Malay dish)
b) Nasi Lemak ( Local Malay rice dish )
c) Nasi Kandar ( local Indian rice dish )
e) Roti Chenai ( Local Indian Pancake/bread )
f) Char Kuey teow ( Local Chinese Fried noodles )
g) Bak Kut Teh ( Local Chinese Pork Rib Soup )

There are also so excellent Fusion dishes by famous local restaurants too. Ie :- Soul Out , Alexis , Mrs Read, etc

Bon appetie!!! '');

If you don't mind splurging a bit, Madam Kwan's Restaurant has a range of authentic local dishes. There's one on the 4th floor of the KLCC shopping centre (right beneath the Petronas Twin Towers). Each dish would cost up to double the price of what you'd pay at a local street corner or regular restaurants. But that's what you pay to dine at such establishments. There are also many other pretty good restaurants in the shopping centre if you fancy other varieties of food.

For dining in style and good view from the sky (literally), book ahead for a place at the Seri Angkasa revolving restaurant on top of the KL Tower (Malay: Menara KL) - not to be mistaken with the twin towers. They do lunch, brunch, afternoon tea, hi tea and dinner; all buffet-style! As with the location of the restaurant, so are the prices.

For street foods, Chinatown and Jalan Alor (at Bukit Bintang) are the places to go.

If you want to try local Malay Food, You can try Seri Melayu Restaurant. There are several areas in KL where you can have your meal. I suggest you to try it at one of its outlets at the KL Tower. They do have traditional Malaysian dance shows at night. You can also make reservation first so that you can secure your table. Restoran Seri Melayu
