Hi all,
We made a spontaneous decision this weekend to pack up and go tour Vietnam and Malaysia for about 10 weeks.

We are flying in the next 5 weeks and would much appreciate some advice on a rough itinerary for Vietnam (about 5 weeks) and Malaysia (about 5 weeks).

And if there are any other advice or suggestion you would like to make, everything and anything would be useful!!

Thanks

Leon,
I think many TP members will be jealous that you can just take off and tour SEA for 10 weeks!

I don't know what city you are flying into, but will guess HaNoi. You have at least 2-3 days of city sightseeing before hitting: Perfume Pagoda, Thay & Tay Pagoda, Bat Trang, HaLong Bay, or other day trips from HaNoi. Book everything once there. The competition is fierce and you will get many different prices for the some tour. Talk to at least 3 travel shops before booking anything. Hit the Water Puppet show one night as well. You can buy a ticket right at the theatre or your hotel will do it. A trip up to Sapa maybe on your agenda before leaving the HaNoi area as well.

You have the choice of train or overnight bus down to Hue. I vote the 'open tour' bus system to work your way down to HCMC. It is much cheaper and more convenient than the train. Hue is worth 2-3 days, river tour or moto tour to the sights outside of Hue. I went with Thu, the lady that runs the 'Cafe on Thu Wheels'. Photos in gallery. Tour of DMZ is not worth your time IMO. On to DaNang, then Hoi An. Most ladies love Hoi An because of the custom clothes made there. Great walking tour of the historic section, My Son ruins. Buy your ticket at the start of the historic section, buy a My Son tour from any travel shop in Hoi An. Overnight bus/train to Nha Trang. Best beach & snorkelling option IMO. See my blog, photos. Your choice of another beach at Mui Ne, or up to DaLat. I vote DaLat. Cool, pretty, different. Mui Ne has the sand duness, but average beach/water. Into HCMC. Tour city, tunnels, delta. Now I am going to vote that you use 6-7 of your days to visit Angkor Wat. This is if you have not seen it already. You now can take a direct bus to Siem Reap from HCMC. Bus or boat back to Phnom Penh, fly to Malaysia.

I will let others help with your time in Malaysia. Send me a PM if you have questions on VN or Cambodia.

Mike,

Hi, and thank you much for the info it looks awesome will most definitely want to spend a couple of days is Sapa and going try my best to go to Angkor Wat, had a look at your blog and can't wait to see these places?

Would you have any suggestions on spending money for time mentioned in these places? Got some planning to do in the next 4 weeks!! And also what would be the best way of taking money with you, or is it best just making use of the ATM’s there?

Cheers
:)

Hi There,

Suggest you fly to Malaysia - KL first. Then from there check out the flights from KL to Vietnam,Thailand,Indonesia, etc which is pretty reasonable.

Check out Airasia Web site for flights availability and fares. Else you can travel by Bus/coach .

Or you can even cover ASEAN countries by flight. Ie Malaysia - Thailand - LAOS - CAMBODIAN(Angkor Wat) - Vietnam - Indonesia.

It is doable but depends on your wish and budget.

Hii leon, I think I agree with kcsun, it is better for you to arrive in Kuala Lumpur first, and then move ahead to Thailand and Vietnam.. For a more adventurous trip, u can take train from KL-Hatyai (Thailand), Hatyai -Bangkok, Bangkok - Arrayanprathat (still in Thailand). from Arrayanprathet, you can take bus to Battambang, and Phom Penh - Ho Chi Minh City (Vietnam) by Bus. There you go, finally u reach Vietnam plus two other countries.. :)

In Malaysia, I recommend u to Taman Negara Kuala Tahan in Pahang. it is a National Park with a very wonderful view and wildlife. Dont forget to dive at Pulau Redang, and climb the second highest mountain in SEA, mount Kinabalu in Borneo..

Have a nice trip..
