I leave for sydney on the weekend and i'm wondering what is the best bet to get my money over there. Obviously i'll take some cash to hold me over for a few days, travelers cheques for somewhat more long term but i'm going for six months and i'm wondering how people got the larger sums of money overseas. I have my work visa so i'll eventually need a bank account over there anyways, or so i've been told, so i might as well get one early. should i just get a lot of travelers cheques or what? thank you!
also i am with the Bank of Montreal if this helps info wise
i just searched for the right word finally and found some helpfull old forums, it looks like commonwealth is the best bank to get with in australia. I'll talk to my bank tommorrow and see what they advise. I'm still just concerned about getting a larger sum of money there, doing it in small amounts could add up.
If you're going to be working, sorting out a local account will probably be a good idea - the sooner the better. Can you do this before you go or do you have to do it while you're there? Then you could just transfer some money into it from your Canadian account.
However, while I was travelling, I lived as much as possible from a credit card. Our travel funds were in a cheque account back home and a (trusted!) family member would send a cheque to the credit card company every month to pay it off from the funds. You either have to sign blank cheques in advance and leave them with someone you trust, or get them to be a signatory on your account.
