Hello

I'm going to go to Aus in September (for abouts a year) and hoping to have about five grand. I'm not too sure if that's going to be enough.... Friends who have travelled say yes, but i'm not sure if they are being over optimistic for me. I do plan to work as well though - again hopefully!

I'd also like to know what other people think.

Cheers :- )

Hi,

If you're going in on a working visa you need to have $2,000 with you (in your bank acc not physically on you) and prove that you've got it by havin a copy of bank statement etc. Me and my boyfriend are taking £10,000 between us for 4 months in asia and a yr in oz but working while there to keep the pennies up. so yeah- £5,000 seems alright if you budget right.

Good luck! Sam

Hey guys, u dont actually need to show u have 2K in your bank account. Im currently on my 2nd working holiday visa in Oz! Some people come with 1K some people come with 10K, it just depends on what u wanna do! My advise to u is save what u can & bring as much as u can! Hostel life is not cheap in Oz, u would be paying anything between $130 - $210 per week to stay in a 4 bedroom dorm! Im in darwin at the mo & when the dry season kicks in, it's over $200 per week for a bunk bed so bear that in mind! It will also take u a couple of weeks to find ur feet, look for jobs etc so make sure u have enough money to get u through the start of your trip until u find a job!

The great thing is u get all your tax back for all the work u do while in Oz which is a great saving scheme! U can use the money to continue your travels, take trips in Oz etc.

Hope this helps x

Really? you don't need to prove what money you've got? Awesome! Sorry for giving the wrong advice- this was drummed into me by my travel company but thanks for putting me straight!

Im coming over with just 2k - flying to perth and am wanting work as soon as I get my head together after a week or so.
May be a bit Ambitious considering the world is on its arse but im thinking id rather pay off my debts over there than here!
I have never heard of anyone having thier funds checked at all. Im sure it does happen but of all the people i know - no one has had that happen.

Anyone job hunting at the min in oz? Spesh over WA - any leads or ideas on where to start - im up for anything really - hoping to get into an office role as im a PA in london at present.

Cheers

If you have £5,000 in savings and are planning to work you will be Fine.

Surely if you plan to get jobs you can live off your wages, for day-to-day life.

If you are applying for a general temp office/admin job in the city, expect to get paid between $20-$30 per hour, which after tax is about $700 per week. If you dont go crazy you can live off that and not have to touch your savings. Thats what i have done anyway.

Tip: If you are coming over to Oz to work, forget about hostels, to live in every day they work out very very expensive and stressful when you are doing a 9-5 job. Instead look on Gummtree for a flat/house share. It is much much cheap and generally a lot nicer.

if you need any advice on places to live, recruitment agents etc let me know.

Thats really encouraging! I have been looking to flat share for deffo! No way im staying in hostels and trying to hold down a job too. I plan to stay in hostels only when travelling. Are you in oz now? If you could mail some info to me it would be appreciated. I plan to live off of earnings like you say - I spoke to a friend and she said work is scarce but I suppose it depends on what you are looking for. Plus skills and experience.

Many thanks
