Colonia is a pretty sleepy town. There is some swimming on the beach on both sides of the Buquebus. They excel at renting some pretty weird looking golf carts and scooters. The downtown core is pretty to look at. Rent a bicycle...or the scooter and go check out the old Bullfighting ring. Go through the many holes in the fence and take pics of the inside. They don't fight bulls in Uruguay anymore. As my friend Luis from Colonia would say....It's Very Tranquil, Very Tranquil" I stayed there for a month to hide from Christmas this year. Good luck. D |

Although very pretty, there is little to do once you have wandered around the heritage listed part of the old town. It is a long way to anywhere else. It is also expensive there. buquebus is a ferry, you should stay near the terminal which is near the old town. Buenos ariens go there for the day and weekend. |

Fussy is right...but I disagree on the expensive part. And it is not a long way to everywhere. Two hours to Montevideo and the countryside is right there. It is beautiful. But he's right the town is quiet. D |

Dear ALL, THank you for the replies to this post. I'm very greatful indeed. Can anyone kindly advise me of the activities I can do if I decide to spend a night and a day in Colonia? I'm tempted to spend just a few hours but if there is more to do then I can spend a couple of days. please advise. |

Well, you can rent a gokart or some of the other weird modes of transport there and bomb around through the back roads. The country is pretty...You can swim in the river along the huge stretch of beach....... .....uhmmmmm........ Oh, you can go up into the lighthouse..... .....ehhhh...... ......... that's it. The town is very very laid back...I'm not even sure why they decided to put the ferry terminal there. |

Yes, definitely. And maybe not even that. Colonia may be a nice outing if you're exploring Uruguay, but I can think of better day trips on the Argentinian side. The museum of natural sciences in La Plata, for instance. |

Dear All, Thanks for your help over this in the past couple of months. It is appreciated! As my trip is near, are there any more activities that one can do for a day in colonia? Please let me know Thanks |

I am loathe to say it, but Colonia is worth the trip only for what it represents...a visit to a new country. I don't think you can find a day's worth of interest, if you are on a schedule. Old downtown core, scooter trip to the Bull Ring. Maybe a swim in the river...that's it. That said, I LOVED my month there. I went to Montevideo for exactly one day...I was glad to get back to Colonia. But I was looking to relax....which I did in Spades. Have fun....Enjoy yourself. GLOT |
