Travel Forums Introductions Hello from Canada!

Hey! So I am new to this forum... and thought I'd introduce myself! :) The name's Kim, and I am from Ottawa. Last year I moved to Ireland on a WHV for 7.5 months, and then backpacked around Europe for 2 months. This trip changed me in that I realized that travel is something that I want to do for the rest of my life. Unfortunately this slightly conflicts with my dream to become an animator, but I will figure out how to mesh art and travel together. :) Currently I am planning a trip to Europe in August. I plan on staying in Denmark for 3 months doing a course at a Danish Folk High School (not like regular high school) and then chilling in Europe for about 5-6 months afterwards.

I am a minimalist and independant kind of traveller. I dislike tours and prefer slow travel, staying in places for longer periods in order to gain a better taste of the culture. I'm looking for advice on insurance, what's awesome in the Balkan peninsula, and where the hell I can find a 40L, durable, zip-top backpack with strong zippers in Ottawa!

Hello Fellow Canadian,

The easiest answer to your last question regarding where you can find a 40L backpack is MEC, there's one at 366 Richmond St. in Ottawa. Their selection of backpack is not the best though, if you can't find what you're looking for you could always go to Montreal or Toronto (I could tell you a LOT of places in Toronto).

As for a career which includes a lot of travel, I'm in the same boat as you. I think my ideal career would be an adventure motorcycle travel writer with an interest on food and beverages. Still not sure how I will resolve all of those interests. Independent traveling is the way to go, best of luck for your future plans and let me know if you have any questions I can help you with.

Toronto, Ontario

Welcome to TP, Kim!

If you make the trip to Montreal, try La Cordée for backpacks. I got a great 35L one there and it's comfortable, to boot!

Good luck with your lovely trip!

Yes, I've already been to MEC, and haven't found anything (the zippers are all so flimsy!!). There are a couple of adventury stores in the area, though, so I'll have to check them out. :P Thanks for the advice! And I may be going to Toronto in a couple of months, so if I am I'll definitely look there! :)
