hey everyone,
Was wondering if anyone else has any irrational fears that they just can't explain?:( I am terrified of sharks but strangely fascinated too. It's funny cos i dont even live near the sea and even if i did, i can't imagine a Great White terrorising bathers in Blackpool! I can't even look at a picture of one, I have panic attacks in the pool imagining one is going to suddenly emerge from the grid down the bottom of the deep end... hello???? how am i gonna cope in Australia?

Hmm... either don't go swimming, or swim behind somebody else!

I have a bit of a fear of public speaking, but it's never really come up when I'm travelling. Actually, I find those kind of fears usually disappear when you travel. Very expensive therapy!

Have fun in Australia anyway! Maybe stick to the outback....

hmmm... i have always been afraid of heights. i use to have these dreams where im falling and i actually hit the ground. and it hurts in my dream. i am afraid of rollercoasters, planes, tall buildings, and anything that has a view over ten feet....... it is so irrational to me. i get these crazy panic attacks starting a week before going to amusement parks or anywhere where my feet is off solid ground.

i decided to fight my fear and go skydiving with my friends. i had to build up some courage and had a few drinks before i went. but it was pretty awesome. i still have this fear, but i can mentally block it out when need be. the mind is a crazy place.

Hey Fin (appropriate username),

You could always take a knife with you! Just kidding ;) Like any other swimmer in Australia, you just have to be careful to swiim between the flags. Whatever you do, don't jump into any old bit of water that you see. Some tourists seem to do this from time to time only to find out the waters are croc / shark infested. Hmm.. maybe I'm not helping with all this talk. Honestly though, there's plenty of places to swim that are more than safe. There are beautiful pools by the seaside also, which means you can enjoy the safety of being surrounded by concrete while still seeing the sea.

As for my own fears, I got a bit anxious in the middle of the night last night about spiders. I had a white-tail climb up my leg while watching TV in the evening and that kind of freaked me out - made me worried there are more of them in the house. They're not deadly it turns out, but they can give you blisters for the rest of your life!

Cheers, Peter

Thanks Peter for the nice spider climbing your leg story!! It's set me all on edge!

That's one good thing about the UK, no scary/dangerous/poisonous wildlife! Mind you I had a mouse in my old house and that gave me nightmares!

If I see millipedes or centipedes on TV (too much Discovery Channel) I feel physically sick and have to look away. If I came across a millipede for real I would have a seizure. Its something about the ripple along their legs as they move that is just revolting and horrifying.

Hey fellow scaredy kats!

This one is gonna sound totally crazy but i have an irrational fear of newspapers! i dont know why but they make me feel so sick.... i cant touch them, i dont really like looking at them, and the worst thing is the smell! My friends think its hillarious and often hide them in my bed!!! yuk!!! But then my best mate has an even sillier one, she has a phobia of stickers....especially the ones you get on apples, and price tickets too!!

Some very very irrational ones.....

I love it when people remind me that Im not alone in the world with my irrational fear! I am afraid of snakes. I cant see them on tv, or a magazine, cant even stand to hear their little rattle or hiss! They are scary beasts that slither around the earth like... uhhh Im disgusting myself! Ive always had this fear, and im from Canada, which is nowhere near snakes. But honestly, the worst is when the Crocodile Hunter finds one slithering about, and decides to grab it... I cannot handle that!

Once, when I least expected it, a National Geographic or Discovery channel commercial came on the tv, and this massive snake attacked the cameraman, thus making it seem like the abominable snake was attacking me in my comfortable home! That gave me shivers for a long time. Thats probably the biggest problem with my dream trip to Costa Rica. I cant wait to go but snakes! EWWW! But I will go and Ill either get used to them, or close my eyes and run away from them!

I'm pathetic with Heights (or more correctly with me sheer/steep drops, rather than actual altitude which is ok), and often go funny just watching things on TV, uch as about skyscrapers - actually, i change channel asap. My love of planes (despite never being on one, and not actually sure what i'm scared of) is also well documented in these pages...

I also have small problems with naked flame in some situations and also large amounts of water (or rather me being in it) due to incidents in my past.

Not a huge fan of large hairy spiders, but normal ones are ok.

I have a kind of wierd fear. Only wierd because there is no reason for it. I get totally paranoid when I am in a body of water that I can't see the bottom of. I am terrified there is something down there that's going to bite me or sting me or whatever. Fish I'm sure are not just going to bite random swimmers, nor would there be crabs, sharks, or any other scary animals sitting on the bottom of cold Canadian prairie lakes, waiting for unsuspecting bathers but i can't help myself. I would freak out if I felt a piece of grass on me in the water. UGH! That's my stupid thing. And I hate all bugs too of course. I like to think I can run faster than bees. Believe me I've tried. DUH!

GIANT MOTHS - don't ask I just hate moths especially big ones but I love butterflies - I can't explain it but if a giant moth is in my room at night I'll just freak out - if I hear it fluttering around behind the curtains or around the light or similar - horrid!! Oh yeh and bees but then I was attacked by bees living in our attic once so that might explain that one! I still don't understand the moth fear though oh and are we counting weird fears when we were younger - well I had a fear of graveyards and crows although I may have outgrown that fear now I am not sure, haven't tested it recently
