Hi James,
I think you can take train to Nanning(The capital of guangxi province) from Shanghai. The price are between 231 to 642 yuan.It will takes you about 27 hours and 57 mins.. If you think it's a long time to take a train ..You can choose to get to some city by train which is not far from Nanning and have a rest ...Then keep moving ..It's up to you..
And when you get to Nanning ..It's very easy for you to get to Hanoi..There are some different ways and different prices can get to Hanoi..And what's more, you can make a vietnamese visa in Nanning..It's about 380 yuan for 30 days ...
P.s I'm from chinese and live in Nanning ...Here is my cellphone number:[snip] Don't hesitate to call me if you need some help...
Have a good time and good luck..
Talk you later.

[ Edit: Sorry, no personal details please. ]

take a bus from Nanning... to Hanoi.

When in Vietnam, I GUESS, it best to just buy BUS tickets in your hostel. I didn't, I took the Hellish train ride to HUE, becoz I thought I was saving. Besides the bus would stop in some cities and you get to set foot on some beaches or towns.

The sleeper bus is definitely cheaper (the train is 40 dollars if i remember right while the bus is like... 15??) but pretty hellish too, speeding through the night on one of the world's most unsafe roads, and the "beds" are well, uncomfortable, to say the least. Its late, it doesnt stop for anything (plenty of pissed off people who couldnt relieve themselves because the bus driver didnt want to stop... )

Its your choice but if i had to do it again Id go for the train...
