i just watched brokedown palace. where these two girls go to thailand for their graduation present. and then get into all sorts of trouble. anyway, i told my friend that i wanted to go there for a few days.... but she told me that it will be too dangerous for two girls to travel alone. i feel like it would be such a waste not to go. but then again should i be more careful about my destination choices. what are some of your experiences there and should i be concerned?
Hi. You and your friend should go!
I'm going to Thailand all by myself on 5th January, and I know a lot of of other people travel there alone. I'm hoping to meet lots of other travellers of course though and not intending on wandering around alone at night or anything!
I think as long as you read up on the places you are going to, and take all the necessary precautions, and basically be sensible, you will be fine. Yes there are things that could go wrong but then you could get hit by a bus tommorow outside your house.
I had a friend who was trying to talk me out of it but sometimes people have only seen negative things like these films. Anyway, weren't they caught smuggling drugs in Brokedown Palace? Not the smartest thing to do!!
Have a good adventure and make the most of life!
It safe as long as you know how to protect yourself in your country. Safety is beging from yourself.
No worries...Thailand is generally a very safe place. I have been there with another girl friend a few times, and never had troubles. But as in any other countries, just keep up your guard and not be too trusting, even tho the Thais are such nice ppl its hard not to like them too much!
Not sure where you are thinking of going, but touristy places like Bangkok, Phuket, Krabi, Chiang Mai etc etc should be safe.
But recently, the south of Thialand is having some security problems, politically related, so I would not recommend you going too near to the Malaysia-Thai border...
Nah, those films just serve to scare you! Hahhah, Thailand is a great place for 2 girls to go to! Have a good time!
Just read this today in the Toronto Star about a man who got jailed in Thailand for drugs. Claims he is innocent (don't they all). http://www.thestar.com/NASApp/cs/ContentServer?pagename=thestar/Layout/Article_Type1&c=Article&cid=1098568215942&call_pageid=968332188854&col=968350060724
His main piece of advice, don't hang around with anyone doing anything illegal. It's guilt by association.
Thanks for all the advice. I just heard how beautiful it is in Thailand and I really want to go see it. I hope it will be a great adventure. I think I am going to let me friend read this so she will agree.
another post to convince your friend, just in case. Thailand was my first stop (for 2 weeks) when i left home - 18 year old girl alone - and it was absolutely fantastic, i met a bunch of people both in bangkok and on the islands who invited me to party with them and gave me advice, and occasionally steered me clear of bad ideas. and on top of that, while i was careful, i never once had to fend off trouble, nor did i get robbed or ripped off. maybe i was lucky but i just wanted to balance out all the horror stories, because Thailand is still one of the best trips of my life, and im going back (alone) in December
of course you have to be aware of the fact that there can be trouble around, but its not going to come looking for you, if you are sensible youll be fine.
i know how many people, me included, wish that Thailand wasnt such a well beaten tourist track, but the fact that there are so many Westerners there meant that i could go it alone without much hassle, and so can you. Becuase yes, you will meet heaps of people to have fun with and im sure youll have a kickass good time, you and your mate have nothing to worry about.
have a good trip!
thanks for your advice. i would go alone, but my friend is coming with me on this trip and well she is the level headed one and i needed to convice her to add it into our planning. but your comment gives me courage to go regardless. thanks again.
