What is the best way to get to the west coast of SA without having to travel through Columbia? BTW, How is Columbia?

Either fly or get a ship. Flying is expensive in South America (distances tend to be great) and cheaper booked outside SA.

The west coast of Columbia has Medillin and Cali. You've probably heard their names mentioned in connection with drugs and violence. Stay clear.I was in Cartagena (NW Columbia) some years back and quite liked the place.

Heya. I am in Costa Rica now and have been asking quite a bit about the leg from Panama to Colombia. I have spoken to a few people and have heard some different info. On the whole, getting a ship shouldn´t be too difficult. There are hostels in Panama that have connections so it shouldn´t be too bad. However, I have heard some bad times on the ship itself.

Also, it is probably going to be at least as expensive as a flight to Colombia to sail. I am not too sure about skipping over Colombia. But I have talked to some people who were recently there and I will be going myself soon, and I have heard nothing but good things. People felt safer in Colombia than in Costa Rica.

I would recommend giving it a go. But I don´t think anyone will blame you if you don´t.

I am in colombia at the mo and you would be silly to miss it.. this country is amazing, I have never met friendlier people, the scenery is spectacular and it has a rich culture and fascinating history.. needless to say, I absolutely love it here and will be sad to leave.

In terms of getting from central to south, we took a sailing boat for 9 days from san blas to cartagena, it was a little pricey like $50 a day but well worth it.. be very careful when choosing your boat, what size, number of days etc.

Have a fantastic trip!
