Hey pja - we fly into Bogota in July to begin our six month break. Any tips about Colombia and any advice for places you wished you hadn't gone, places you wish you had gone, or places you wish you'd stayed longer?

Any problems with muggings or that sorta thing?

Hi Benito2k, my only regret was not being able to stay everywhere longer. I would have liked to go into the Amazon region but just didnt have the time. I didnt particulary like Taganga, but thats just personal taste to be honest, I just found the place dirty and unfriendly, and too many westerners taking drugs. I would suggest that you read up on the country before you go, have a basic plan of where you want to go and do, then keep it flexible. I cant suggest not visiting a place as you might love the place yourself. I really had a great time there, and as for horror stories I dont have any. I heard some stories from other travellers but for myself the only problem I had was the riots in Bogota on May day, and a few attempts from pickpockets in Cartagena.

You will need to keep your wits about you and stick to basic survival practices, i.e, money belts, dont flaunt any wealth or any valuables, stay to populated and well lit areas at night time, if your gut instinct says move on, then do so. Beware of fake police and security officials (mainly plain clothed), if you are worried go to a uniformed police officer on the street and ask for help. If you feel like someone is trying to rip you off or threaten you, then they probably are and you should just walk away quickly.

Learn to speak spanish (if you dont already), even just a little.
