I am looking forward to forthcoming trip on Odyssey Overland departing April 18th 2010 from London to Darwin.

I was wondering if anyone else has been on any round the world overland trips, as previously I have only ever flown round the world while travelling and done a road trip but not anything of this scale?

I was looking at this trip aswell. It sounds amazing! Do you know whether Overland Odyssey is ATOL protected? I emailed them but I have since had no reply :(

Hi Heath

I'm not sure if they are ATOL protected, the guy that organises the trip has been in Africa sorting out the African Odyssey trip recently but I'm meeting him in Edinburgh on August 9th so Ill ask him then. Is there anything else you would like me to ask?

Hi, I did the Odyssey trip in 2008, and have only just returned to the UK as I carried on in Oz and NZ - this travel lark gets addictive!

I had a fantastic time, the crew (Pete, Tim & Cheryl) were brilliant, we had a really good group of people and I would recommend it to anyone. Any questions just ask and I'll try to answer, though if you're keen and just looking for final confirmation then I'd recommend going to see Pete at one of the meet ups he organises as that will convince you!

I'm booked on this as well. Can't wait. Any advice would be great.

I am currently on the 2009 London - Oz trip with Odyssey, trust me, you will not regret this. This trip is epic, you will see some amazing places and do some amazing things, and you will come away changed for the better. This is travelling as it is meant to be, going through places, not over them at 450mph. Most of the best stuff I have seen has been in places that you simply cannot get to without local knowledge and your own capable vehicle: you get both on this trip.

In terms of advice, there are some things I have found very useful, and some not so.
Bring as little as you can comfortably get away with, most people on this year's trip have 65-80L bags, and most grumble about having too much stuff to carry around, including me! (I have an 80L bag.)
Don't skimp on warm clothes/sleeping bag! Our trip was pretty chilly through Europe, partly chilly in Turkey and Georgia and cold at Everest (obviously). I have a good 3-season bag, but others have 4-season, it just depends on how warm you like to be.
Bring a good camera and some way of storing loads of photos, I have 4 16GB memory cards, slightly excessive but 2 are already full.
Bring a full MP3/MP4 player, 6 months is a looooong time to be listening to the same tunes!
I brought a nice phone (HTC Touch HD) to avoid bringing my netbook, but several others have netbooks with them. You will be surprised how many places you can get wifi! I remember a certain field in Romania with wifi, and a bamboo hut in Vietnam as well...
I brought some binoculars, but have hardly used them. Unless you feel you will need them, don't bother, the truck will have at least 1 pair.
Mozzie net, pointless, as anywhere you will need it already has one.
Pacsafes are great, you will want one for SE Asia as here you will be mostly in hotels, etc.
The truck will have all the Lonely Planets for your trip, so no need to carry your own.

I can't think of anything else off the top of my head, other than do as many optional activities as you can, you only regret the things you haven't done! And have a great time!
